German priest freed after over a year in captivity in Mali

Fr Ha-Jo, a German priest with over 30 years of experience in Mali, was kidnapped in Bamako on November 20, 2022. Despite being aware of the risks to his safety, he continued his work in Mali to improve the country's situation and stay with his Christian community. News of his release circulated earlier in the week, and it was officially confirmed on November 29, 2023, by the Missionaries of Africa, expressing their joy and relief.

Fr Ha-Jo, a project partner with Aid to the Church in Need, had a deep commitment to interreligious dialogue in the majority-Muslim country. Regina Lynch, Executive President of ACN International, expressed relief and happiness at his release, highlighting the need to remember others persecuted for their beliefs worldwide, particularly in Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso. The statement also acknowledged the increased jihadist activity in Africa, a concern Fr Ha-Jo had noted during a visit to Switzerland in 2022.

The Missionaries of Africa thanked all contributors to Fr Ha-Jo's release, including the Malian and German authorities, and mentioned his return to Germany for reunification with family and necessary care. Despite the ordeal, the order hopes for his quick recovery and minimal after-effects. Fr Ha-Jo's dedication to his mission, even in the face of danger, is underlined by his belief in making the world a better place and finding meaning in one's actions.
